Barbara Crawford was almost 12 years old when she left her home in March 1843, to work as a domestic servant near the harsh Brisbane Penal Colony at Moreton Bay.

Unknown to her, the man who hired her, wanted her as a domestic of a different kind and soon she was living the life of a housewife.

For almost two years she was hidden away in bushland until financial greed got the better of her man and she was taken away to sea in an attempt to salvage whale oil from the wreck of a whaling ship.

The little cutter they sailed in was wrecked near the tip of Cape York Australia and Barbara was destined to live among a tribe of cannibalistic headhunters for the next five traumatic years.

Barbara Crawford became Gioma, a girl of the Kaurarega tribe of Murralagh Island. When found by Captain Owen Stanley and the officers and men of the British Survey ship, HMS "Rattlesnake" in October 1849, Barbara was almost totally tribalized and had been taken as wife by one of the warriors of the tribe.
